Habitat

Unable to dive more than three feet below the water’s surface, Ospreys gravitate toward shallow fishing grounds, frequenting deep water only where fish school near the surface. Ospreys nest in a wide variety of locations, from Alaska to New England, Montana to Mexico, Carolina to California; their habitat includes almost any expanse of shallow, fish-filled water, including rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, swamps, and marshes. Whatever the location, Osprey nesting habitat must include an adequate supply of accessible fish within a maximum of about 12 miles of the nest; open, usually elevated nest sites free from predatory mammals such as raccoons, and a long enough ice-free season to allow the young to fledge.

Last Year

“How are you feeling, Harriett?” the Doctor thought.

“I feel fine, Doctor,  why do you ask?” reflected Harriett.

“Well, I noticed that last year you laid your first egg April 9. Your second egg came April 12 and the third April 15.”

“So?”

“Well, it’s April 20, 2018.

“So?”

“You know what I’m thinking.”

“Mind your own business, Doctor.”

Hey Doctor – Ladder

“Hey Doctor, how about getting this latter out of here. Don’t you know raccoons and other predators can use it to their advantage?”

End of Season

Jonathan, J.C. and I are about to head South.  We will be taking separate vacations and meet up here next year.  J.C. will stay in South America next summer and start his migrations in 2019.  Then he will pair with some beauty and start his own life.

Here are a last few pictures:

I will keep the Doctor up to date by way of telepathy.

See you next year.

Love,

Harriett
