The Doctor lay on his back, on the firm mattress, deep within his giant nest.
The bed felt good. The bedspread was cool against his back. He let his muscles relax and the gnawing ache in his low back receded. He lay there, arms by his side, hands cupping his outer thighs. It was very comfortable.
Marley pounced on his chest and thrust his cool snout into the doctor’s face.
“Down!” Command of the Doctor in a deep stern voice.
Marley obeyed immediately and laid down contently at the bedside, happy to be with his friend.
Cleo hopped upon the bed. She knew she could nap with the Doctor since the Female H. Sapien was not at home. Cleo nuzzled and rubbed her head against the bedspread and the Doctor’s side. It only took a couple loving strokes by the Doctor’s hand and Cleo knew she could nap with him all afternoon.
The Doctor could hear them breathing. The computer hummed in the background. The giant nest made creaks and bumps.
Silence rang from outside.
“The Mission. What about The Mission?” the Doctor worried.
He thought about The Mission for a long time. The thoughts brought him anxiety and distress. The Doctor rolled onto his right side hoping to escape by sleep.
Cleo stood up and licked the Doctor’s mouth and face.
The Doctor smiled. He appreciated it very much. The Doctor gave Cleo a hug and a kiss.
“Squawk! Why so gloomy?” Harriett interrupted the Doctor’s thoughts.
“Well Harriett, I was thinking about our mission. Have you forgotten all about it?”
“Forgotten about it! Good grief Doctor, you have such little faith in me. Forgotten about our mission?! Come on now. Why do you think I’m here, in the Taj Mahal, beside your giant nest? Of course I have not forgotten our mission. It’s just been a tough couple of months; or perhaps you didn’t notice?”
It was pleasant to hear Harriett’s sarcasm. It made the Doctor smile.
“I’ve about got the nest completed.”
Harriett’s thought transferences was clear and upbeat.
“Just a few more renovations, then I lay an egg, and while I keep it warm, we will get down to business.”
The Doctor breathed a sigh of relief.
“Everything will be all right,” he told Cleo.
And the three of them napped all afternoon.
